Every significant event gives birth to conspiracy theories. When a volcano erupted in ancient times humans attributed the event to the Gods who were either waring among themselves or who were displeased with the behavior of people on earth. We may be amused by that perspective but back in the day it was the best people could come up with given the information at hand. It was their way of filling in the gaps.
